Title Sequence Clips

    My initial impression of the opening scene of 2001 Space Odyssey was that something crazy was going to happen, based on the eerie sounds and pitch-black screen that was showed in the opening scene. It then went on to show a primate who was holding a bone, using it as a tool. This was foreshadowing the advancement that was going to be shown later in this scene, and what tools would look like to us now.  

My initial impression of the opening scene of Scream was that it would be a horror movie, and that there would be a lot of blood. The words spelling out scream were in a dark red color, symbolizing blood, and had loud screaming in the background of the title. There is an anonymous caller who calls the main character and is starting to freak her out. The main character also mentions that she enjoys horror movies, which was just a small joke towards the fact that she was in a horror movie, and that statement was leading to her being followed.  

My initial impression of the opening scene of Jaws was that it would have lots of action, because of the intense music that was playing at the beginning. The music was slowly building up to build up the pressure and excitement. The letters spelling out the title, “Jaws,” were round, bubble letters, which is not what have been expected.  

My initial impression of the opening scene of Apocalypse was how the man was sleeping and was having these intense flashbacks of the war. This man most likely had PTSD from a war that he was sent into to battle and is often reminded of it. The blades of the ceiling fan reminded him of the helicopters from the war. In this scene, there was a fade out transition, where the blades of the helicopter faded into blades of a ceiling fan. This is to show the past and paint a picture of the main character, and then show how he thinks and sees things now. Throughout the whole beginning scene, there is a song that repeats the line, “this is the end,” many times.  

My initial impression of the opening scene of Goldfinger was that the main character would be fighting for the good of people, face problems and adversity, and then come through at the end. The movie started off with iconic music in James Bond movies, and the same iconic view also. The view that we are inside of the gun, and we are looking through the barrel of the gun. This is a point of view perspective, allowing us to feel like we are in the movie. It’s also a creative angle that stands out to the audience, grabbing their attention.

In the article, it talks about how it is not very often that you see the title designer in the credits of the movie. The article states that, “title sequence heroes remain few.” This is talking about how the artist of the title sequence is not usually mentioned in the credits. The title sequence is crucial to the movie, leading you into the movie through the way the letters are designed, the sound in the background, and many other factors.  

Also, the article talks about how people that are in the film and typography industry usually have some favorite title sequences. This shows how important the title sequence can be, and that it is not pointless.
